Monumental American mantel in quarter sawn oak. Four Ionic capped, fluted columns rise from the legs of the mantel to frame the firebox. A large modified ornamental band of egg and dart moulding runs across the top of the firebox. Superior to that, an elaborate overmantel boasts stately caryatid pilasters, geometrical raised panels and elaborate ziggurat cartouches.
Originally installed at the famed Rittenhouse Club at 1810 Walnut Street in Philadelphia, it formed the focal point of a large paneled room in the club. The club itself, was originally formed in 1875 by a distinguished group of physicians, scholars and businessmen and its membership over the years has included a veritable who’s who of prominent members of Philadelphia history.
